8.Zoe's Last Day

Zoe looked up into the dark blue sky as the clouds swirled. Light pierced through the fragile gray mists above. The sky lit up as an object beamed closer towards the ground through the night sky. Zoe reached over grabbing Allie pulling her close, watching the light fall farther down towards the earth gliding through the air with ease. Even though it was not uncommon for meteors to travel this close to the atmosphere, this seemed to burn much brighter than anything else either of them had ever seen. Within moments the object exploded, igniting itself and all of the air around it in an iridescent yellow. They both jumped a bit when they heard and felt the wave of the explosion but sat almost motionless, watching the object descend towards them. Zoe leaned his head on Allie's, biting his lip gently. Neither of them understood the danger possible if they stayed much longer, Zoe could begin to feel some of the heat from the falling object as it sailed towards them. Allie smiled and looked over to Zoe pressing her lips gently against his while tightening her grip on his hand that she'd been holding. As a huge grin was forming on her face she opened her mouth to say something, but not before a piece of metal came out of no where and sliced directly through a sandwich that she'd brought along if they got hungry. More and more pieces began to hit around them both, leaving Allie wide eyed and to scared to move.

“ALLIE, MOVE!” Zoe yelled, grabbing her arm standing up trying to pull her up as hard as he could.

She was frozen and absolutely unable to do anything as her eyes grew wider, watching the sky above, unable to hear or comprehend anything that Zoe was yelling at her. Time began to slow in their minds as the heat grew so hot that Zoe could feel it start to burn his flesh. Allie shifted her gaze into his eyes, as tears began to form in hers, she placed her hand gently on his cheek and smiled pressing her lips to his as the tears in her eyes ran down her face and fell to the ground, reflecting the color of the flames that came to life around them as more pieces crashed around them, destroying or slicing through anything they touched. His skin began to blister as the heat grew, the burns hurt even worse; he could hear the sound of the fires burning as they flew through the air towards both of them but he couldn't care less right now. Pulling back from the kiss to look in her eyes, he could see all of her panic, all of her care, and all of her sorrow hidden behind the masking smile she'd always tried to use when she was scared out of her mind. He began to realize that their time was imminent and approaching fast, so he crouched down over Allie and closed his eyes while putting his forehead on hers a little smile spread across his face regardless of the heap of fire swarming down around them sending pieces of metal, fire, and circuits everywhere.

“At least I'm able to be with you in the end..” He said quietly while brushing the tears from her eyes with his thumbs.

The metal falling around them screamed the anger and pain that Zoe was feeling as the flesh on his bones began to sear. He closed his eyes tight and clamped his jaw down hard trying to keep the appearance to Allie that he wasn't hurting. He could feel her shaking beneath him no matter how hard he tried to keep her calm it wasn't helping at all. Allie looked slightly beside him with fear in her eyes and opened her mouth to scream but it was too late as a metal casing had plunged itself through both of them, directly through their chests in just that quick moment the pain Zoe felt was too much to hold in. He began to shake and feel blood come from his mouth, he lifted Allie's chin to give her one last kiss before they both left this world but it was already too late. She'd left without him and her now empty eyes were the only thing that he looked into for the few moments he had left.

“That's it, huh..?” He barely muttered out with a small smirk before closing his eyes for the last time.

Zoe woke up, wide-eyed and gasping for air, covered in sweat. He closed his eyes, covering his face and took a deep breath. This same nightmare has haunted his mind for years now, no matter how much he tried to get rid of it or think of anything else, it would always come back sooner or later. Zoe looked over to his side and watched Allie for a few moments before she woke up too. It was actually a bit surprising that she was able to sleep through all of Zoe's tossing and turning all night. She smiled up at him with her breathtaking blue eyes and patted him on his cheek as she always did to comfort him. He couldn't help but feel his heart melt away as he felt her touch barely grazing his skin.

“Have the nightmare again?” Allie asked, clearly still half asleep.

Zoe nodded silently re-telling the story with his emotions. Regardless of how hard he tried to hide anything from her, she'd always had a way of knowing. The skill that Allie had of detecting Zoe's lies or cover ups had not only gotten him in trouble countless times, it's also kept them both very honest with each other and closer than most couples their age. So their days both had begun the same way it had many times before, they showered together and ate breakfast as quickly as they could before they had told both head off to work. Allie worked for a hospital after graduating from a community college and getting an internship. Zoe worked for a packing plant for clothing and accessories, which helped both of them get nicer clothing for cheaper prices. They both worked about 8 to 10 hours a day to keep up with the rent, food, and 'just in case' money that they kept for emergencies.

Zoe was panicking all day about a choice he was going to make later on tonight. He'd made plans with Allie to go out to a secluded part of a forest that they lived near for a dinner date in the moonlight while watching the stars. What Allie didn't know, was that tonight was going to be the night she was going to be proposed to. Through out Zoe's entire work day everyone was asking him if he was okay and alright, mainly because his face was beet red and his heart was pounding out of his chest, his palms were even sweating from just looking forward to tonight. Zoe sent Allie multiple texts all day reminding her of the date and giving her subtle hints that something was going to be a big deal.

When both of their work days were over, they each headed to the forest by themselves. Zoe stopped by the shop to pick up the ring. Allie headed to the store to pick up some extra food just in case they ran out and packed it in with the rest of the dinner. She was in charge of getting all the food around because if it was up to Zoe, they'd be eating nothing but steak and while that was good every now and then, she couldn't handle eating it all the time. Once they finished shopping and picking up whatever they needed to, both of them had met up right outside a pathway that Zoey made a few days ago while preparing for the big night.

Allie reached down and quickly interlocked her fingers in his while smiling, staring straight through his eyes. Zoe blushed and gave her a peck on the cheek. They started through the path, moving quickly at first but then slowing down after only a few minutes due to almost getting lost a few times. Once they finally reached the end of the trail, Zoe began laying down the large blanket for something to sit on. Allie got most of the food around and occasionally poked Zoe, then acted like she didn't know who did it, it was one of their many games they played with each other. Finally everything had been set out and the two got settled in, the night was going great as they traded stories about their days at work. Both watching the sky as it glistened with dancing stars.

It seemed as if the sky was darkening to a deep blue. The clouds began swirling in the air with a light breeze chasing quickly after. An ordinary night for some, but tonight Zoe knew it was going to be more special than anything else in his life. It was the night that he'd been marking down on his calendar, day after day, waiting endlessly for the day to inch ever closer. Each gaze of passion in to each others eyes rivaled a hurricane raging off of the shores of a lonely island's beaches. Yet there it was, the familiar feeling of panic. Zoe's heart started to race once again, the same it had been at work all day today. Bright lights beamed through the clouds and hinted that the time to ask was near. The meteors above were dancing through the barely lit stars. Though he'd rehearsed asking the question hundreds of times in the mirror, he couldn't shake the strange feeling that was creeping in the back of his mind. He hardened his resolve and looked directly into her blue eyes, realizing she had not taken her eyes off the scenery in front of them. He wanted to say it, but everything in him was holding him back. How could he even break such a sight? This feeling, with her there alone with him was greater than he had ever experienced and yet every attempt to break her concentration was useless. Zoe turned his head to see what had her so captivated and quickly noticed, the distraction he had been waiting for was here, a flicker of emotion as she turned to smile at him, melting him so easily in her gaze.

They both watched each other, feeling every second as days. Zoe knew this was the one he chose to allow himself to fall in love with, and it was worth every second. Her eyes depicted the same as her feelings, such passion and peacefulness. The only one he felt he could trust, even when they were children. They both leaned in for a kiss, their eyes closed as heat from their lips made contact. Embracing this moment, both bodies moving closer, hands wondering just as they did on their journey here. Though it was hard to think Zoe knew he had to ask her. The spot he picked out to put the ring was just up ahead, in the trunk of an old oak tree they once carved their names into. He released his lips from hers, hardly able to speak a single word. Allie let out a quiet giggle as the two began eating their sandwich dinners that she'd made for them.

Zoe looked up into the dark blue sky as the clouds continued to swirl at a faster pace with each passing second. Light pierced through the gray mists that surrounded them as the morning drew closer. The sky lit up as an object soared through the sky. Zoe reached over and grabbed Allie, pulling her close while they watched the light fall towards the earth, gliding through the air. The light was burning so much brighter than anything else either of them had ever seen. Within moments the object exploded in the air, launching pieces of itself and all of the air around it in an iridescent yellow flame. They both jumped a bit when they heard and felt the wave of the explosion but sat motionless in awe, watching the object descend towards them. Zoe leaned his head on Allie's, biting his lip gently. Neither of them thought twice about the possible danger if they stayed much longer. Zoe began to feel the heat from the falling object as it sailed towards them. Allie smiled and looked over to Zoe pressing her lips gently against his while tightening her grip on his hand that she'd been holding. “Beautiful, isn't it?” She whispered out, as a huge grin formed on her face. Within seconds, a piece of metal came out of no where and sliced directly through her half eaten sandwich. More pieces began to hit the ground and trees all around them. Allie was set into an almost instant shock, sitting wide eyed and to scared to move.

“ALLIE, MOVE!” Zoe yelled, while grabbing her arm standing up as he tried to pull her up.

She was still frozen in shock and unable to do much as her eyes grew wider, watching the sky above. She was so terrified that she wasn't even able to hear or comprehend anything that Zoe was yelling at her. Time slowed down to a screeching halt in their minds as the heat grew. Zoe could already feel it begin to singe his flesh. Allie quickly shifted her horrified gaze into Zoe's eyes. As tears began to form in hers, she placed her hand gently on his cheek and smiled pressing her lips to his as the tears in her eyes ran down her face and fell to the ground, reflecting the color of the flames that came to life around them as more pieces crashed around them. The metal destroyed and sliced through anything that they touched. It didn't take long before Zoe's skin began to blister as the heat grew, the burns hurt even worse. He could hear the sound of the fires burning all around them as they flew through the air towards both of them. Pulling back from the kiss to look in her eyes, he could see all of her panic, all of her care, and all of her sorrow hidden behind the masking smile she'd always tried to use when she was scared out of her mind. He began to realize that this was his exact nightmare, which meant their time was imminent and approaching fast. Zoe crouched down over Allie and closed his eyes while putting his forehead on hers a little smile spread across his face regardless of the heap of fire swarming down around them sending pieces of metal, fire, and circuits everywhere.

“At least I'm able to be with you in the end..” He said quietly while brushing the tears from her eyes with his thumbs.

The metal fell around them, screaming the anger and pain that Zoe was feeling as the flesh on his bones began to burn deep into him. He closed his eyes tight and clamped his jaw down hard trying to keep the appearance to Allie that he wasn't hurting. He could feel her tremble beneath him. No matter how hard he tried to keep her calm it wasn't helping. Allie looked slightly beside him with fear in her eyes and opened her mouth to scream but it was too late. A metal casing plunged itself effortlessly through both of them. It pierced directly through their chests, pinning them together and to the ground. The moment the pain hit, Zoe couldn't fake it any longer. He began to shake and feel blood come from his mouth, he lifted Allie's chin to give her one last kiss before they both left this world but he knew it was already too late. She'd left without him and her eyes would be as empty as the nightmare.

“That's it, huh..?” He barely muttered out with a small smirk before closing his eyes for the last time.
